GOMA x Lûmé

Date: Friday 12 July
Time: 7:30pm – 11:00pm
Venue: Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), Stanley Place, South Brisbane, QLD 4101

There are certain characteristics that John Rivera’s food in Melbourne’s iconic two-hatted Lûmé restaurant shares with GOMA; both are edgy, creative, and have a spirit of experimentation about them. GOMA and Rivera are a match made in creative culinary heaven – and we invite you to consume both GOMA’s and Rivera’s works of art. The evening will be served in GOMA’s Long Gallery, where you will have exclusive access to ‘Quilty’ – the first major survey exhibition in a decade by Ben Quilty, one of Australia’s most acclaimed contemporary artists.

Last year, Rivera took the helm at Lûmé, which has been a stalwart in the high-end food scene in Melbourne. At just 25 years of age, Rivera was a risky choice to be picked as their head chef – but risk is exactly what has made the Lûmé such a favourite. Lûmé’s motto has always been “fine dining is great, but fun is better”, so Rivera’s in-your-face passion for flavour is perfect for the avant-garde restaurant.

The hatted GOMA Restaurant is headed up by talented executive chef Douglas Innes-Will, (ex-Qualia, Hamilton Island), with the help of Michael Bickford (also Qualia alumni) and Matt Blackwell (formerly of two-hatted Ides). The extraordinary kitchen team of GOMA Restaurant invite you to indulge in this fine-but-fun degustation, where flavour and taste are executed as brilliantly as the world-famous art on the walls.

This is a fabulous one-off event, which gives you access to one of the country’s most beautiful art spaces. We welcome you to enjoy this unique perspective on both art and food, for an evening that we believe will be cherished forever.

About the exhibition ‘Quilty’: The exhibition extends from Quilty’s early reflections on the initiation rituals performed by young Australian men to his experience as an official war artist in Afghanistan and his campaign to save the lives of Bali Nine pair Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. The exhibition also includes works inspired by Quilty’s visits with author Richard Flanagan to Lebanon, Lesbos and Serbia, his revisions of the Australian landscape, and raw, intimate portraits of himself, his family and his friends.
