Cult vegan restaurant, Smith & Daughters (Melbourne) is as rock ‘n’ roll as it is vegan. And that is to say, 100%. Head Chef Shannon Martinez managed to make a vegan restaurant whose clientele are not exclusively plant-based diners, reaching firmly into the flexitarian market. Her cooking is just that good. She’s bringing her plant-based magic up to Sydney with an Italian style feast you will never forget.

Whether it was your family, or your friend’s family growing up, we all have those food moments imprinted in our DNA of the first time we tried something wonderful. Maybe it was your first taste of fresh, hand-picked basil, great olive oil, or fresh figs so juicy they exploded in your mouth.

With her Spanish lineage, Martinez says she’s been cooking ever since she can remember. And ever since one fateful night when she was a bartender at The East Brunswick hotel when the chef said he was popping out – and he never came back – Martinez had to take over the kitchen.

She never left it.

Martinez is co-owner of cult vegan restaurant, Smith & Daughters (Melbourne) and it’s an in-your-face, rock-n-roll, plant-based, runaway success. While it might sound both punk and poetic that Martinez is, in fact, a meat-eater (complete with a jamon tattoo), her killer vegan menu was created out of a lack in the market for decent vegan options. She estimates that around 75% of her clientele are carnivores, or rather, flexitarians – a new breed of meat-eaters who appreciate plant-based deliciousness. She is also the co-author of ‘Smith & Daughters – A Cookbook (That Happens to be Vegan)’ and we’re beyond happy to see her at part of Sydney’s Good Food Month.
